This FAQ provides basic steps for installing, working with firewalls, proxies, and special hints for personal or corporate settings for Windows or Macintosh.

The basic requirement is a PC compatible system with Internet Explorer and administrative privileges. It is very important to make sure that you have administrative privileges in the account where you will log in and read publications. You will need admin privileges, at least temporarily, to install and activate the Zinio Reader in your account. If you aren't sure, ask your System Administrator or IT department to check, and if necessary, temporarily grant administrative privileges.

Check your browser settings. Your browser settings must be correct to work with the website, the installation, and the downloads. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Security. Click "Default Level" (Medium). This will make sure that Cookies are enabled, and that Java and Javascript are turned on. You should also choose the Advanced tab and click the Restore Defaults button.

Many of our customers have CookieCop or similar applications that block cookies. If you have this application (or something similar), temporarily disable it while you install, and make sure that cookies are enabled in your browser. After the publication has downloaded, you can re-activate CookieCop. Please note that if you have CookieCop turned on, you will not be able to download publications, and you should disable CookieCop each time you download a publication.

Connection Speed. You can download the Zinio Reader and publications on a 56K modem or faster connection. 48K and slower modems will have difficulty downloading the files.

After you have downloaded the Zinio Reader, double-click the file once to run the installation program from your own computer. When you are finished installing the Reader, you may want to delete the reader.exe file from your desktop. If you are prompted to reboot at the end of installation, you should do so right away. The installation will not complete and connect to activate your account until you reboot.

Troubleshooting Installation.

1. A very common error in installation is that you do not have administrative privileges (see above). A "Class Not Registered" or "#8004007B" error also means that you do not have administrative privileges. You must have admin privileges, at least temporarily while you install.

2. Some customers get an "Unsupported Browser" error message. If you do, try using a different browser. Either Netscape 4.7x or Internet Explorer 5 or higher will work. If you still get the error, contact Zinio Customer Support.

3. If your modem connection drops out, you may need to disable your auto-disconnect feature:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options

2. Click on the Connections tab

3. Select your dial up connection in the window and click the Settings button

4. Click the Properties button

5. Select the Options tab

6. Change the "Idle time before hanging up:" setting to "never"

Macintosh OS X Overview

The Zinio Reader and the Zinio Delivery Manager are installed at the same time, in a single step. After installation, the Zinio Delivery Manager will connect to our servers and activate your account.

Getting started. The basic requirement is a Macintosh computer with administrative privileges running OS X 10.1 or higher.

It is very important to make sure that you have administrative privileges in the user account where you will log in and read publications. You will need admin privileges, at least temporarily, to install and activate the Zinio Reader in your account. Generally, if you can install other programs, then you can install the Zinio Reader. If you aren't sure, ask your System Administrator or IT department to check, and if necessary, temporarily grant administrative privileges.

Check your browser settings. Please make sure that you have cookies and javascript enabled. In most cases, you should not need to take any action, since the default settings in Safari and Internet Explorer already have these values set correctly.

Installing the Zinio Reader

1. Registration. If you haven't already, create an account on zinio.com

2. Installation. You can download the Zinio Reader installer file here. Please double-click the Installer file after it has been unstuffed to run the installation program. When you are finished installing the Reader, you may want to delete the installation files from your desktop.

If you are prompted to reboot at the end of installation, you should do so right away. The installation will not complete and connect to activate your account until you reboot.

A very common error in installation is that you do not have administrative privileges (see above). If you receive "Error creating folder. 1008:9,-5000 Access denied", this means that you do not have administrative privileges. You must have admin privileges, at least temporarily while you install. Please contact your System Administrator or IT Department to gain Administrative privileges.

Activating the Zinio Reader

Your Zinio Reader and your account must be "activated" to turn on the Digital Rights Management system that protects the copyrights of the publishers. By activating, you are connecting the specific Reader on your system to your account at Zinio. Publications in your account may only be downloaded to a Zinio Reader that is activated in your name. You may install and activate on more than one machine (for example at work and at home -- see below).

1. Basic activation. After the Zinio Reader has been installed, you will be prompted to log in with your Zinio username (your email address) and password.

2. Personal firewalls. If you have a firewall such as Norton Personal Firewall, you will need to open the firewall application and grant access to the Internet to Zinio Delivery Manager. When the Zinio Delivery Manager tries to access the internet, the firewall software is supposed to bring up a dialog and ask for permission, but we have found that this does not always happen. In these cases, the Delivery Manager appears "stuck." If this occurs, please refer to the firewall documentation for instructions on how to give the Zinio Delivery Manager permission to access the Internet.

3. Corporate proxy servers. If your corporate environment has an authenticating proxy server, you will need to enter your proxy username and password in the Delivery Manager Options to connect through this proxy. If you aren't sure what those proxy settings are, please check with your System Administrator or IT Department.

Troubleshooting Activation and download of publications.

1. If you have to enter a proxy or firewall username and password every time your connect to the internet from your system, be sure to enter that in the Delivery Manager Options.

2. If you are still having trouble or getting a specific error, you can contact Zinio Customer Support. We'll be glad to help you get started.
